The Senate recently passed Senate Bill 465, also known as “Austin’s Law,” with overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Russ Goodman, aims to strengthen laws regarding drug-related deaths, particularly those involving fentanyl.

Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones emphasized the importance of the bill, stating, “Keeping Georgians safe is my top priority. ‘Austin’s Law’ will hold fentanyl dealers and manufacturers accountable and will help prevent the senseless deaths of Georgians.”

Sen. Russ Goodman, the sponsor of the bill, shared the personal story behind its name, stating, “This bill bears the name of one of my constituents, a talented young man. Unfortunately, like many we know, Austin battled anxiety and depression, self-medicating with Xanax purchased off the streets. Tragically, one of those pills was tainted with fentanyl, costing him his life.”

The legislation establishes a new category of offense, felony aggravated involuntary manslaughter, to prosecute drug dealers and distributors. Sen. Goodman emphasized that the bill aims to protect individuals like Austin from those who endanger communities with dangerous substances.

Sen. Goodman expressed gratitude towards Lt. Governor Burt Jones for prioritizing the issue, stating, “There’s nothing more paramount than safeguarding our families, friends, and neighbors, and that’s precisely what ‘Austin’s Law’ seeks to achieve.”

The bill will now move to the Georgia House of Representatives for further consideration. Sen. Russ Goodman, representing the 8th Senate District, can be contacted via email at russ.goodman@senate.ga.gov.
