By extending a state of emergency order, Governor Kemp of Georgia extended the state's gas tax suspension. With Thanksgiving approaching, Kemp's decision to extend the tax break on motor and locomotive fuel seeks to alleviate the economic strain faced by Georgians and businesses during the holiday season.
"Thanks to our responsible approach to budgeting, we're able to deliver relief to families fighting through the disastrous effects of Bidenomics. I'm proud this action has helped keep millions of dollars in hardworking Georgians' pockets and look forward to continuing to see that impact with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching. I'm also grateful for the partnership of the General Assembly as it prepares to enter a special session where legislators will be called on to ratify this measure", said Governor Kemp in a press release.
The press release further indicated that at this time, the suspension of the gas tax will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2023.
Kemp attributes this ability for tax suspension to prudent financial planning under the General Assembly, said in another statement from his office.
According to AAA statistics cited by Governor Kemp's Office, Georgia's current average price for a gallon of regular gas stands at $2.89, which is 51 cents lower than the national average.
Fuel taxes in Georgia currently amount to 31.2 cents per gallon for gasoline and 35 cents per gallon for diesel, as reported by Fortune.
Furthermore, Fortune reported that Governor Kemp can halt tax collection during emergencies with approval from lawmakers, whose next special session was moved to Nov. 29. It remains uncertain if he'll extend the tax break during this special session or declare a new emergency later for further tax suspension.
