8edited

There was one life sentenced inmate incarcerated at Brooks County Jail in Brooks County in the second quarter of 2023, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Robert Leroy Thomas Jr., roughly 54-years-old, is the only inmate serving a life sentence.

Georgia imprisons a higher percentage of its population than any other democracy in the world, locking up 968 per 100,000 people.

State spends between $25,000 and $30,000 on average annually on incarcerated individuals.

Georgia’s crime rate increased in recent years, leading to higher incarceration numbers and more taxpayer money spent on prisoners. Accusations of mistreatment of inmates, riots, deadly assaults on inmates, attacks on correctional officers, and concerns about the poor physical condition of the facilities are a continual problem in Georgia.

Inmates are often transferred around the state of Georgia, which can create data irregularities.
