A lawsuit filed by a group of parents against Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) district over its current mask mandate is now in court.

According to FOX 5 News, GCPS has imposed guidelines for all students and staff requiring them to wear masks inside school buildings with some exceptions for people with documented medical conditions and some disabilities.

Students have complained about feelings of anxiety, having difficulty hearing teachers, and not being able to breathe well when they wear masks, WSBTV News reported.

The group that filed the lawsuit is hoping that the judge will strike down the mandate and allow students to attend schools without having to wear masks.

CBS 46 News reported that Gwinnett County Schools Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts said that GCPS chose to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) when deciding to implement a mask mandate

"We want to make sure that each and every child we serve is served in a safe, warm, welcoming environment. And part of that safety has to do with the adherence to CDC’s guidance, and I certainly will be a leader who follows the science," Watts said in an interview with CBS 46.
