VSU Remembers 20th Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks

Genbusiness002

Valdosta State University Athletics  issued the following announcement  on Sept. 9.

On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City, one of them into a Pennsylvania field, and another into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Nearly 3,000 people, including children, died during these coordinated attacks on United States soil; two of those victims were finally identified this week. An additional 6,000 or so people were injured.

Students in Valdosta State University’s Mass Media Program will commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a special show at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, on VSU TV. The student journalists have been working on the show for a few weeks.

The 30-minute production will feature segments on the impact of the attacks on Americans, the political landscape, and collegiate and professional sports, as well as interviews with members of the VSU community who were on-campus students or professors at the time of the attacks. The students also spoke with a current professor from New York.

Mediacom subscribers may view the live special 9/11 commemorative show on Channel 16. The show will also be streamed live on the Mass Media Program’s Vimeo page at https://vimeo.com/user103089813.

VSU TV will rebroadcast the special show at noon, 7 p.m., and 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, and at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.

VSU’s Odum Library invites everyone to visit September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World, an exhibit of photos commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11 in its first floor south atrium gallery space. This exhibit includes QR codes that link to interviews with survivors and a webpage dedicated to those who have an interest in researching the terrorist attacks and their ongoing impact on the country.
